Dear Students,
The Faculty Association of the Yuba Community College District (FAYCCD) is the union representing Full Time faculty.
You might not know this, but our contract with the Yuba Community College District (YCCD) expired in 2022. We are supposed to be in a new contract from 2022-2025 but are very concerned that we won’t have a ratified contract by 2025. Two years (and counting) is too long!
We’d like to ratify a new contract, but we face some challenges:
- Full-time faculty at Yuba are among the lowest paid faculty in the state. Despite inflation, YCCD has not given faculty a raise since 2022. Due to increased healthcare costs, some faculty are actually bringing home less than they made two years ago.
- YCCD broke the law and took away faculty seniority rights, so they can assign less-experienced faculty to certain sections. The District thinks this will save them money, but it will actually cost MORE.
- Since 2022, YCCD has received 15.8% COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) from the State of California. California gave this money to community colleges so they could meet increased costs during unprecedented inflation. YCCD has passed none of that COLA along to full-time faculty but they’ve given raises to all other categories of workers–administrators, classified staff, and part-time faculty.
- YCCD continues to make poor financial decisions, like spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on pricey Southern California lawyers just to draw out contract negotiations.
- YCCD keeps making classes bigger in order to meet standards of “efficiency” that are literally impossible to achieve. What this means for you:
- Your learning gets less of my personal attention;
- You may have a class canceled because it is “too small,” even though you are one of 13 or 14 registered students;
- You may spend the first week of class on a waitlist, missing valuable community building and learning opportunities, because your college won’t open a new section of that course;
- You may struggle to get all your transfer or degree requirements done in a timely manner.
FAYCCD may be in a fight with the District, but we are NOT in a fight with you. Here’s what we’re still doing for students:
- We are still providing quality instruction
- We are still holding office hours, and answering emails, and responding to phone messages
- We are still taking you on field trips, and producing the play, and advising your clubs
- We are still mentoring you toward your career
- We are still sharing with you our passion for our disciplines
- We are still championing your needs
- We are still taking pride in your success
